I was at the peak of my career as a breast cancer surgeon when I made the hardest decision of my life—I walked away. Not because I didn’t love my work. I did. My surgeries were often curative, and there was nothing more fulfilling than helping my patients. But after having kids at 42 and 44, I realized I wanted to actually raise them. And being a surgeon, with its grueling hours and complete lack of control over my own time, made that impossible.
I looked into non-clinical careers—admin, pharma, UM—but my soul withered just by considering them. I didn’t want to just exist in another system; I wanted freedom. I wanted to be hands-on helping people, but in a way that allowed me to own my time.
